How to get there ?

Sapo Ecolodge is located in Jalay Town, Sapo National Park, Sinoe County, Liberia.

❋ From Monrovia

Distance: 370km

Time: Approximately 7-8 hours (depending on the season)

Directions: Drive from Monrovia to Buchanan. In Buchanan (towards beginning of Buchanan) find the road to Greenville

Alternative 1: Pass through Jacksonville and continue on the road to Greenville. An hour before reaching Greenville, you will meet the road from Greenville to Zwedru. Turn left and go to Juarzon.

Alternative 2: Follow the road from Buchanan to Greenville until you reach Jacksonville. At the end of Jacksonville turn left to pass through the GVL Oil Palm Concession; get to Unification City and follow the road that goes to Juarzon/Billibokree, which is the road that will meet the road from Greenville to Zwedru. When you meet the road from Greenville to Zwedru, you turn left and go to Juarzon. 

Pass through Juarzon and 5-10 minutes after Juarzon, you will see the signboard for Sapo National Park and the Sapo Ecolodge on the right side of the road. Go to your right and follow the road until you reach Jalay Town (you will see the signboards indicating that you are at the Sapo NP headquarters when entering Jalay Town). Follow the road towards the left when seeing the signboards to go through he village. At the end of the football field, go to your right to reach the Sapo NP headquarters. If you are not sure about where exactly to go, please just ask the people.

❋ From Greenville

Distance: 90km

Time: Approximately 2 hours

Directions: Take the road in direction of Zwedru. Pass through Juarzon and 5-10 minutes after Juarzon, you will see the signboard for Sapo National Park and the Sapo Ecolodge on the right side of the road. Go to your right and follow the road until you reach Jalay Town (you will see the signboards indicating that you are at the Sapo NP headquarters when entering Jalay Town). Follow the road towards the left when seeing the signboards to go through the village. At the end of the football field, go to your right to reach the Sapo NP headquarters. If you are not sure about where exactly to go, please just ask the people.

❋ From Zwedru

Distance: 95km

Time: Approximately 3 hours

Directions: Take the road in direction of Fishtown and turn on the right after passing Pennoken Town and the check point toward Putu Jarwodee. When you arrive at the Pynes junction, turn on the left on the Greenville road. When you reach Chelue Town, you will see the Sapo Ecolodge sign board with the Sapo National Park on the left side of the road. Follow the road until you reach Jalay Town (you will see the signboards indicating that you are at the Sapo NP headquarters when entering Jalay Town). Follow the road towards the left when seeing the signboards to go through the village. At the end of the football field, go to your right to reach the Sapo NP headquarters. If you are not sure about where exactly to go, please just ask the people.

What you need to know

  • Upon your arrival, a member of the ecolodge will meet you in Jalay Town at the park’s headquarter office of Forestry Development Authority (FDA) where you will need to fill out some forms.

  • To reach Sapo Ecolodge, allow a 50-minute walk in the forest. The walk starts from Jalay Town, where you can park your car.

  • The trip from Monrovia takes around 7 hours. Please try to depart no later than 7:00 a.m. so you can comfortably walk to the ecolodge before dark, after making the necessary arrangements with the FDA at the Sapo National Park headquarters..

  • There is no mobile signal at the ecolodge so be prepared to disconnect.

  • Payments on site can be made in cash only.

What to bring

  • Swimwear (for cooling off in the river)

  • Raincoat (in the rainy season)

  • Backpack: waterproof or with a rain cover (in the rainy season)

  • Long covering clothing in neutral colors (beige, green, gray, black) for hiking in the forest

  • Rain boots: we can lend some on site but please bring high socks

  • Camera or binoculars for wildlife viewing

  • Insect repellent

  • Headlamp or torch

  • A light sweater for cooler nights

  • Flip-flops/sandals

  • Books/ Games
